We all know something special hides in our daily lives, yet few of us actually notice it. Our eyes are constantly drawn to our phones, fingers scrolling mindlessly. But with a slight shift in perspective, we can experience something truly different—writing letters by hand, giving flowers, looking through old photos, trying new restaurants, walking in parks, stargazing, making time for self-care, reading quietly, having picnics, biking new routes, or listing things we’re thankful for. These small special moments truly brighten our everyday lives. KIJIMA TAKAYUKI’s Spring/Summer 2025 collection “The Natural Explorer: Everyday Adventures” stems directly from this idea. It goes beyond simply wearing hats—it invites us to notice and rediscover hidden beauty in ordinary things. It’s about changing how we see the world through small shifts in perspective.

「The Natural Explorer 日常を探検に変える」のコンセプトは、木島の長年にわたる帽子の制作経験から生まれている。木島曰く「何年にもわたり帽子を作り続けてきたけれど、まだまだ見たことのない（奇抜ということではなく）、やったことのない手法を探る探検」だという。つまり、これまでとは異なる種類の探求心のあらわれとしてのコレクションの立ち位置だ。「劇的に新しいもの、奇抜なものを創造する」ことではない。むしろ既知の中からその当たり前の境界線を自然に越えることで、内なる探求の旅、静かな独創性の追求とも言い換えられるだろう。

このコレクションのメッセージは、現代社会においては特にタイムリーなもの。テクノロジーが支配する世界において、五感を研ぎ澄ますことの重要性を示唆している。そしてシンプルな暮らしの中に美を見出すように促す。冒険家で作家のトリスタン・グーリーをインスピレーション源としたことは、高い山を登ったり、大海原を航海することを意味しない。それは、「日常のありふれた中に非凡さを発見すること」だ。「何かを発見し、その発見を共有する」という探求の定義が、このコレクションの基本を形作ったことは間違いないだろう。

 

The concept behind “The Natural Explorer: Recaptures Everyday Adventures” comes from Kijima’s years of hat-making experience. Kijima explains, “Though I’ve been making hats for years, this is about exploring methods I haven’t seen or tried before—not about being strange or unusual.” This collection represents a different type of curiosity. It’s not about “creating dramatically new or bizarre things.” Instead, it naturally pushes the boundaries of what’s familiar—a journey of inner exploration and quiet creativity.

This message is especially relevant today. In our technology-filled world, it highlights the importance of sharpening our senses and finding beauty in simple living. Inspired by adventurer Tristan Gooley, the collection isn’t about climbing mountains or sailing oceans. It’s about “finding the extraordinary in everyday ordinary things.” The idea of exploration as “discovering something and sharing that discovery” forms the foundation of this collection.

 

上記を踏まえて今期はラフィア、パナマに異素材をミックスしたものやリネンなど、ボタニカルな素材を積極的に採用。自然を想起させるデザインが多く見られるが、その背景を「多くの人が見慣れている春夏素材で、まずは人々の意識の中へ入り込むように」と口にする。

それでは早速本コレクションのテーマ性が色濃く感じられる印象深い２つのアイテムを例に紹介していく。

This season features natural materials like raffia, mixed-material Panama hats, and linen. While many designs are nature-inspired, Kijima explains: “These are familiar spring and summer materials, chosen to connect easily with people.”

クラシックなパナマハットにポップで鮮やかなビーズと本物の石を不規則にトリミングしたこの帽子は、伝統的でフォーマルなアイテムとして知られているパナマハットに遊び心を加えた。コレクション全体のテーマを反映しており、ちょっとした工夫で、最も身近な物に冒険心と興味深い魅力をもたらすことができることを暗示している。エクアドル原産のトキヤ草から編まれるパナマ帽体は、遮光性が高く湿度や温度など環境の変化にも対応しうる夏の王様的な素材。​​「ジャケット着用などの着こなしやアイビースタイルに着用しても、いい外しになりそう。バランスを考慮した逸品です」とディレクターの梶は語る。

This classic Panama hat features colorful beads and real stones arranged in an irregular pattern, adding playfulness to a traditionally formal item. It shows how small changes can bring adventure and appeal to familiar objects. Made from Ecuadorian toquilla grass, the Panama hat provides excellent sun protection and adapts to changes in humidity and temperature—perfect for summer. “It works well even with a jacket or Ivy style outfits, creating a nice balance,” says Director Kaji.

The materials throughout the collection—plant-based elements, retro touches, linen, and Panama straw—are carefully chosen. They combine familiar textures that suggest everyday comfort and accessibility. Through years of experience and careful selection, Kijima creates something intriguing. By using familiar materials, these pieces naturally fit into the wearer’s life, redefining adventure as part of daily living.

デザイナーのプロダクトへのアプローチは、個々のアイテムを超えて共通しているエッセンスがある。「そもそも帽子をかぶる行為は、“外出する”、“旅に出る”という概念と本質的に結びついている」というのが木島の考えだから。どんなに取り止めのない場所に出かけるのであっても、帽子をかぶることで私たちの視覚と姿勢が変わり、世界との関わり方は微妙に変化する。生活の枠組みの中で起こりうる微妙な変化を意識することが重視され「非日常」としてではなく、日常のありふれた場所の中で、喜びや新鮮さが発見できる瞬間を指している。そしてこうした瞬間は「日々のストレスの解放や自己肯定感の向上から生まれることが多い」と木島は話す。テクノロジーが進化する現代社会において、日常の美質に気づく能力は見過ごされがちだが、この美しさを見出すためには「何より自分に正直であること」だと考える。

木島のねらいは、「着用者に驚きと発見の感覚を与え、最も馴染みのある環境でさえも探求の空間へと変える」ということ。とはいえこのコレクションを通じて初めて帽子をかぶる人、またはいつもとは少し違ったデザインを試してみたいというリピーターにとって、新しくエキサイティングなもの、あるいは馴染み深い場所＝日常の再発見となるに違いない。

 

The designer’s approach contains common elements across all products. Kijima believes that “wearing a hat is naturally connected to ‘going out’ and ‘starting a journey.'” No matter where we’re going, putting on a hat changes our vision and posture, subtly shifting how we interact with the world. The collection focuses on noticing small changes within our regular lives, highlighting moments where joy and freshness can be found in ordinary places. Kijima notes that these moments “often come from releasing daily stress and feeling better about ourselves.” In today’s technology-driven world, we often miss the beauty in everyday things, but he believes “being honest with yourself” is key to finding this beauty.

Kijima aims “to give wearers a sense of surprise and discovery, turning even familiar environments into places of exploration.” Whether for first-time hat wearers or returning customers trying slightly different designs, this collection offers something new and exciting—a fresh look at the familiar places of our daily lives.
